B.J. Lazan Award

This award was established in 1967 to recognize individuals who have made outstanding original technical contributions to experimental mechanics. In 1973 this award was named in honor of Dr. Benjamin J. Lazan, a pioneer in his field who achieved recognition in dynamic testing, vibration, materials damping and fatigue.

The award honors inventors, developers or contributors to the introduction of new devices or methods.
Nominations are solicited from the general membership by the Honors Committee.

2012 B.J. Lazan Award: Kaliat T. Ramesh

In recognition of his pioneering contributions to experimental mechanics and understanding of dynamic behavior of materials.

K.T. Ramesh is the Alonzo G. Decker Jr. Professor of Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. His research interests are in nanostructured materials, high strain rate behavior and dynamic failure of materials, tissue dynamics, and planetary impact.

Professor Ramesh received his doctorate from Brown University in 1987. After a short stint as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, San Diego, he joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins in 1988, becoming Department Chair from 1999-2002 and Director of the Center for Advanced Metallic and Ceramic Systems in 2001.
