Composites Technical Division Meeting Meeting Minutes Date: June 8, 2010 Time: 12:00-1:00 pm
Chaired by: G.P. Tandon (Vice-chair)
Attendees (as per sign in sheet): Kishore Pochlreju, Michael Keller. Song-Jeng Huang, Chad Korach, Bradley La Croix, Hugh Bruck, loannis Chasiotls. Peter lfju, G.P. Tandon (Vice-chair) and Srinivasan Arjun Tekalur (Secretary)
Absent Ashok Ghosh (Chair)
The meeting started with brief introduction given by all attendees.
The absence of chair was pre-notified and hence the meeting was chaired by the vice-chair Tekalur updated the attendees on the sessions organized by composites TD in 2010 SEM annual conference. In 2010, The TD was able to organize (with active collaboration with Biological systems and materials and Dynamic Behavior of Materials) 5 sessions as planned and 2 more sessions were added from the general list of papers accepted.
Keller proposed a session on multifunctional composites and Tandon volunteered to take a lead on organizing the session.
Bruck and Chaslotls updated the TD on broader plans of the Society to initiate a subcommittee on multifunctional materials within the umbrella of composites TD. In the immediate short term, in addition to organizing sessions on multifunctional/hybrid composites, the need to invigorate interest in these research areas was highlighted. Significant amount of time was spent on the discussion of this topic. Members of the TD concurred with the suggestion and following points were decided
Tandon and Keller volunteered to initiate steps to gage interest in the research community to participate in SEM 2011 on this particular research topic. They will co-ordinate with each other and with Bruck to provide a tentative plan on how to proceed in stlmulatmg the subcommittee/evoke greater response in multifunctional/hybrid materials research
Bruck volunteered to take initiative in contacting Tom Russell
Tekalur and Chad will take lead on 2 sessions on Biological composites. As previous year, these will be co-sponsored with/by the Biological systems and materials TD.
Tekalur volunteered to interact with Bo Song (Dynamic Behavior of Materials TD) to organize 2 sessions on Dynamic Behavior of Composites.
Pochiraju proposed 2 sessions on accelerated testing of composites; with one session possibly a joint session with Time Dependent Behavior. He has volunteered to take lead on this topic.
The TD decided on five major topics for the sessions to be held in 2011 SEM Annual Meeting {with lead contacts in bold}. namely,
Accelerated testing of composites {Pochiraju, 2 sessions}
Biomimetic Composites (Collaborate with Bio TD) {Tekalur, 2 sessions}
Dynamic Behavior of Composites (Collaborate with Dynamic behavior TD) {Tekalur, 2 sessions}
Green Composites (related to recycling and use of biologically sustainable/disposable metenats in composites) {laCroix, 1 session}
Multifunctional/hybrid composites {Tandon & Keller, 2+ sessions}
The idea of providing lunch to TD meetings was appreciated. At the same time, it was suggested that due to holding all the TD sessions at the same time, attendance at composites TD may have suffered
Meeting adjourned at 100 pm
